Overcoming the Barriers to Education

St. Nicholas Burrus’s journey exemplifies resilience and determination. Born with a terminal heart condition and severe hearing loss, he defied medical expectations from infancy. At 18, he underwent critical heart surgery, experiencing clinical death for two minutes before resuscitation. In January 2020, he received a life-saving heart transplant.

During his recovery, Burrus discovered the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s (UMPI) YourPace program, an online Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Management and Leadership. Drawn by its flexibility, he enrolled and, remarkably, completed coursework even from the intensive care unit. Fourteen months post-transplant, he graduated with honors.

His academic achievements earned him the American Council on Education (ACE) Student of the Year award in May 2021. Burrus credits the YourPace program’s adaptability and his employer’s support for his success. He is now pursuing a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership at UMPI, continuing his commitment to personal and professional growth.
